Many electrician apprenticeship applications ask for proof of normal color vision before you can move forward. That requirement can stall your application if you can’t find an office that will see you soon or charge a fair price for the test.
Our team has been seeing quite a few candidates from the local electrician’s union lately, so we know how tight those deadlines can feel. You can get a quick Ishihara color vision test at our optometry office, where we aim to see apprenticeship candidates right away and keep the fee low. If it’s been a while since your last checkup, you can add a comprehensive eye exam to the same visit.
What Is the Ishihara Color Test?
The Ishihara test uses a series of circles filled with colored dots. Each circle hides a number made from dots in a slightly different shade, and your job is to name the number you see.
Depending on the version, your optometrist may show you anywhere from 8 to 34 plates. The test only checks for red-green color deficiency, which also happens to be the most common type. Blue-yellow deficiency is rarer and needs a different test, so let us know if that’s a concern for you.
Signs of Color Vision Deficiency
Mild color vision deficiency is easy to miss, but you may notice a few of these signs in everyday life:
- Trouble telling red and green apart
- Colors that look dull or faded
- Difficulty seeing different shades of the same color
- Mixing up color-coded items, like wires or charts
Most color vision deficiency is passed down through families. It can also develop later in life because of eye conditions like cataracts or as a side effect of some medications. Tell your optometrist if colors start to look different than they used to.
Who Needs a Color Vision Test?
Electricians work with color-coded wires every day, which is why so many apprenticeship programs want a test on file before you start. Other trades that rely on colored signals or labels may ask for one too.
Kids benefit from a color vision check too, ideally before they start school. So much of their classroom material uses color coding, and your optometrist can check their color vision during a pediatric eye exam.
How Long Does a Color Vision Test Take?
The Ishihara test usually takes just a few minutes. You’ll look at each plate, say the number you see, and move to the next one.
Your optometrist can go over your results right after the test and answer your questions. If the plates point to a deficiency, they may suggest another test to learn more about its type and severity. And because the visit is short, you can fit it around a work shift or a school day.
Online Tests vs. In-Office Tests
Apps and websites let you try color plates from your couch. Still, your phone’s brightness and color filters can change how the dots look on screen, which makes the results hard to trust.
Online tests can give you an early idea of how you see color. But apprenticeship programs usually want results from a licensed optometrist, and an app can’t sign your paperwork.
How Much Does a Color Vision Test Cost?
Fees vary from office to office, and they often depend on whether the test is part of a full eye exam. Plate books sold online cost less, but they won’t provide official results.

Low-Cost Tests for Apprenticeship Candidates
We keep our fee low for apprenticeship candidates. Starting a new career already comes with plenty of costs, like tools and work boots, and we’d like this test to stay affordable. Give us a call and we can share the current fee when you book.
