Dr. Spencer Whatcott grew up in Modesto. He went to high school at Thomas Downey High. He did his undergraduate work at Brigham Young University, where he was Phi Kappa Phi. He was Phi Beta Kappa at U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry, served as class president, graduated first in his class and later served as an associate clinical professor for 7 years.
He is an accomplished musician, amateur astronomer and ham radio operator. He enjoys racquetball and motorcycling (Honda, not Harley). He is also a volunteer tour guide for San Francisco City Guides. But his favorite activity is raising his son, Nathan.
